The year 2023 is set to delight us with the arrival of the second version of Hoka’s speed-oriented pair. Great news for trail runners looking to excel in short and medium distances.
In terms of technology, the Tecton X 2 is equipped with a dual-density foam. A denser and firmer section provides excellent responsiveness, while a softer second layer cushions the impact when your foot hits the trails. Additionally, there are two carbon plates integrated into its ProFly-X midsole, running parallel from toe to heel, enhancing proprioception.
The pair is announced at 252 grams, which is a slight increase compared to the Tecton X version 1 but still within the norm for this type of shoe. The 5mm drop is consistent, although it may not suit everyone’s preferences.
Hoka continues to rely on Vibram for the design of its outsoles, a smart choice given Vibram’s reputation for quality. The 4mm deep lugs may not be ideal for muddy terrains, but they provide excellent traction on dry surfaces.

Just like the first version, the Hoka Tecton X 2 for men comes equipped with a double carbon plate in the midsole. This is paired with a ProFly X dual-density foam: a firmer and more dynamic lower layer with a softer upper portion that provides a comfortable impact.
- Weight of 252 grams and a 5mm drop:
It’s a bit unfortunate that the pair adds a few grams compared to the first version of the Tecton X. However, this increase is just 10 grams and is likely to go unnoticed during your runs. - Stunning Reactivity and Dynamism:
There’s no disappointment when it comes to dynamism. The pair is advertised as ultra-responsive with its carbon plate, and it lives up to the claim. You genuinely feel a significant ‘boost’ in propulsion on flat and downhill terrain sections. However, this doesn’t demand more muscle effort. To sum it up, the effort remains the same, but the speed is higher. We particularly enjoyed the Tecton during our fast-paced sessions and on less technical terrain.
- Comfort Is Definitely There:
To be honest, we didn’t expect this level of comfort. Brands are now able to offer lightweight, dynamic, AND comfortable shoes. It reminds us of the new Asics Fujispeed 2. We’re far from the models with minimal cushioning to save a few grams. You could easily wear them for a long trail run. Hoka has done an excellent job in this regard.
- An Attractive Weight:
With around 250 grams, we believe the weight strikes a good balance between lightness and comfort. Unless you’re specifically looking to shave off every possible gram, the Tecton X 2 could suit all runners, both amateurs and pros
